Resilience: Building the Foundation for a Thriving 2025
by Jane Dockerill
As I stood frozen on a steep, icy red run on Christmas Day, -22 degrees biting at my face, I felt something I often hear my clients describe—being “frozen in the spot”. I’d skied before, but as a nervous and fragile skier with a secret fear of heights and the cold, this was my first time truly experiencing the fight, flight or freeze response.
No amount of coaching from my husband could move me from that terrifying perch. Eventually, I slid down on my backside while he carried my skis and poles—a far cry from the festive family vision I’d pictured.
Reflecting the next day, I realised this moment of raw vulnerability had gifted me an invaluable personal lesson in resilience… and just weeks later, I was so excited to be part of a wonderful tribe of women at the launch of Ebb&Flow’s first day retreat at the Soul Space Barn; I actually used this story to anchor my talk on resilience—a topic that now felt more relevant than ever.
January is a natural time for introspection, a moment to reset, restore, and plan for the year ahead. After the festive whirlwind—often marked by overstimulation, depleted energy, and even loneliness—it’s the perfect time to build the foundations for resilience.
Step 1: Meet The Current You
This year, take the time to catch up with yourself. The 2025 version of you is not the same as last year’s model. What do you value now? What feels non-negotiable? What boundaries or habits need to change to support your growth?
Truth and transparency are key. Sit in those uncomfortable spaces and reflect on what’s no longer serving you. Commit to showing up for yourself—even when it feels challenging.
Step 2: Build Resilience As Your Foundation
Resilience is not about preventing challenges; it’s about how you navigate them. Life will get tricky—there’s no escaping that—but knowing what you need to regain balance when adversity strikes is a superpower.
Boundaries – Who drains you? Are there relationships, activities, or commitments leaving you feeling bruised, empty, or hurt? Create stronger boundaries to protect your energy and well-being.
Relationships – Some relationships are for a reason, some for a season, and some for a lifetime. Are the people in your life aligned with the 2025 version of you?
Career Goals – What are you committing to professionally this year? Building resilience in this area means defining your vision, setting realistic goals, and staying adaptable when challenges arise.
Wellness – Resilience starts with self-care. What habits, hobbies, or health changes will help you stay grounded? Consider your diet, exercise, and personal passions as pillars of your overall well-being.
The Past – What stories, labels, or patterns are you holding onto that no longer serve you? The past can’t be changed, but you can choose to make peace with it. Let go, move forward, and embrace a clean slate.
