Kate Leonard has kindly written us a little about her wonderful course that she is hosting over a 4 week period at Ebb&Flow yoga studio, Farnham. She has a wealth of helpful advice, tips and practical guidance to offer through her wonderful Yoga therapy classes.
It’s important to note to begin that this course is open to everyone – whether completely new to Yoga or a practitioner for many years.
Who is this for?Kate says ‘”no matter your ability I have built this course to have the aim to treat all the symptoms of anxiety”. Some of which are: Muscle tension, elevated pulse, disturbed breathing, panick attack, sleep issues, restlessness, difficulty focusing, irritability and feeling fearful. There are many conditions which can cause Anxiety and the practices
will be helpful for people with these.
It will also be useful for people who experience symptoms of stress and anxiety and are looking for a way to manage the way they feel. Kate says ” this course will be ideal for those with GAD (generalised Anxiety Disorder), Panic Disorder, Phobias – including social phobia, PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) and OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder).
Each week will differ slightly, the idea being that Kate will help you gradually progress over the four weeks. To begin with, you will release tension (using movement within breath) enabling you to move forwards.
She will focus on lengthening the exhale throughout – starting with simple excercises then becoming more subtle and internal. Each week the effect will be the priority, to begin by calming and letting go, building towards a stabilising and grounding effect. There will be Yoga postures (don’t worry if you’re a beginner) combined with breathing techniques and eventually sound and mantra to enhance these effects.
When appropriate we will start to use visualisation, the practice will become more meditative. No excercise will be given unless appropriate for students on the course and if needed, modifications will be taught.
Each student will feel the effects after each session but after the four weeks you will have a tool box of useful techniques to use over and over again if needed.
Each week everyone will recieve a worksheet with the practice on along with any useful notes: A guide to use at home, Yoga takes practice and some effort but the benefits are outstanding.
Katy is happy to be there via email or phone to aide any students between each week should they need.
Essentially, yoga therapy is the application of yoga practices to alleviate physical and mental health conditions with the view of promoting self-care and encouraging overall well-being. Whilst the practice of yoga in general aims to cultivate the body and mind and hence has the potential for therapeutic effects, in yoga therapy you are using specific yoga practices and their known benefits to help alleviate or improvement mental and physical ailments
